What You’ll Learn

Assessment
Apprentices completing programmes with Specialist Skills Hub are assessed by an independent organisation, with their final evaluation carried out through two distinct assessment methods.
Assessment 1 - Work Based Project
Apprentices complete a substantial piece of work that reflects genuine organisational needs, allowing them to apply their knowledge of data protection and information governance in a practical context. The project must demonstrate clear analysis, appropriate decision making, and effective implementation of policies or improvements. An independent assessor then reviews the project and evaluates the apprentice’s competence, ensuring they can apply regulatory requirements and best practice confidently within a real working environment.
Assessment 2 - Professional Discussion underpinned by portfolio.
The second assessment is a professional discussion supported by the apprentice’s portfolio. This structured conversation allows the apprentice to reflect on real work carried out during the programme, using the portfolio as evidence of their skills and development. Through targeted questioning, the assessor evaluates competence, explores the apprentice’s decision making, and confirms their understanding of the broader responsibilities and behaviours required for the role.
Outcomes & Progression
By completing the programme, apprentices will gain a well-rounded set of skills that prepare them to contribute confidently to organisational data protection and governance functions. They will be equipped to establish and oversee compliance programmes, ensuring that data protection responsibilities are embedded across day-to-day operations. Learners will also be able to develop internal policies and guidance, maintain retention schedules, and offer informed advice on the appropriate disposal of information.
The apprenticeship enables individuals to build productive relationships with stakeholders and take an active role in managing projects that support organisational compliance. Apprentices will be confident in delivering training and awareness activities, supporting the creation and maintenance of records of processing activities, and analysing data to inform decision making. They will also develop the capability to manage information requests, undertake data protection impact assessments, and respond effectively to personal data breaches.
In addition, learners will be able to support audit and assurance activities, contribute to the continual improvement of organisational practices, and assist with the implementation of recognised toolkits and standards such as the Accountability Framework, the Data Security and Protection Toolkit, and ISO 27001. These competencies provide a strong foundation for progression into more senior roles within data protection, information governance, and related compliance fields.
