What Is An Apprenticeship
How Is It Funded
Apprenticeship funding in England operates through two main routes: the Apprenticeship Levy and co-investment. Employers with an annual pay bill exceeding £3 million are required to pay the Apprenticeship Levy, which equates to 0.5% of their total pay bill (minus an allowance). These funds are placed into their Apprenticeship Service account and can be used to cover the costs of apprentice training and assessment. Smaller, non-levy-paying employers typically access funding through co-investment, where they contribute around 5% of the total training and assessment cost, with the government funding the remaining 95%, up to the maximum funding band. Additionally, levy-paying employers can transfer up to 50% of their unused levy funds to other organisations, such as those within their supply chain. Specialist Skills Hub facilitates this process for non-levy employers and SMEs, achieving a 100% success rate in securing funding through levy transfers.
