What You’ll Learn

Throughout the programme, apprentices will develop a comprehensive range of knowledge, skills, and behaviours across key areas of data and AI practice. They will learn how to capture, validate, model, clean, and present data effectively, building on the foundations established in the Data Technician standard. The course explores data visualisation, storytelling, and how to communicate insights to stakeholders with clarity and impact. Apprentices will gain a solid understanding of Artificial Intelligence, including how AI and Machine Learning workflows operate within a business context, and how to apply AI and automation tools to enhance productivity, accuracy, and insight generation.

The programme also emphasises responsible and ethical data use, covering essential topics such as governance, bias, privacy, transparency, and compliance. Learners will develop the ability to work securely with data and AI systems in line with legislation, data protection principles, and organisational policies. In addition, they will learn to adapt to emerging technologies, understanding when and how to apply AI methods and how to collaborate effectively with more advanced data and AI specialists. Professional behaviours are embedded throughout the programme, ensuring apprentices build strong communication, teamwork, and continual learning skills to support effective performance in the workplace.

Learner Journey

Learners will develop knowledge, skills and behaviours over the course of the 13 months, practically applying what they are learning along the way. Learners will complete a work-based project in months 10-11 to practically apply everything they have learned. Learners will be supported by a dedicated Data Skills Coach throughout their learner journey to ensure they reach their highest potential and have the best experience. Programme components include:

Assessment

Learners undertaking apprenticeships with Specialist Skills Hub are assessed by an independent organisation, and their final evaluation is completed through two assessment methods.

Assessment 1 - Scenario Demonstrations with Questioning

The first assessment is a scenario based demonstration with questioning. During this assessment, apprentices are presented with a realistic workplace situation that allows them to showcase their technical skills, problem solving ability, and understanding of data and AI concepts in practice. They must complete tasks that reflect genuine job role activities, while the assessor observes their approach and asks targeted questions to explore the depth of their knowledge and decision making.

Assessment 2 - Professional Discussion underpinned by portfolio.

The second assessment is a professional discussion underpinned by the apprentice’s portfolio. This structured conversation provides an opportunity to reflect on real work completed throughout the programme, supported by evidence gathered in the portfolio. The assessor uses the discussion to assess competence, explore the apprentice’s reasoning, and confirm their understanding of the wider responsibilities and behaviours expected in the role.

Outcomes & Progression

By the end of the apprenticeship, learners will have developed the ability to efficiently gather, validate, and prepare data for analysis, using professional tools and techniques. They will be able to apply data visualisation and storytelling methods to communicate insights effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences. Apprentices will gain practical experience in deploying AI and automation tools to enhance data workflows, with a clear understanding of their benefits and potential risks. They will also be equipped to apply industry-standard practices in data protection, security, and governance within data and AI environments. Alongside technical expertise, learners will demonstrate strong collaboration, professionalism, and a commitment to continuous improvement within cross-functional teams. Successful completion of the programme will enable progression into roles such as Data Analyst, AI Support Analyst, or Business Intelligence Operator, or serve as a stepping stone towards further apprenticeships or higher-level study in data science, engineering, or analytics.

Entry & Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for this apprenticeship, applicants must have been resident in the United Kingdom for at least three years prior to starting the programme. They must also be based in England for a minimum of 50 per cent of their working hours to meet funding and delivery requirements. Additionally, candidates should not already hold a qualification at the same or a higher level in a similar subject area, ensuring the apprenticeship provides genuine skills development and progression opportunities.
