GCHQ shares what happened next for the codebreakers at the end of WWII

To mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Japan Day, we have released letters which show what happened to codebreakers working at Bletchley Park when Japan surrendered to the Allies and war was declared over.

The first of the documents is a draft letter sent to staff at Bletchley Park, GCHQ’s wartime home, granting them two days paid leave in celebration of the end of the war.

Appropriate design: a code of practice for online services

From the moment a young person opens an app, plays a game or loads a website, data begins to be gathered. Who’s using the service? How are they using it? How frequently? Where from? On what device?

That information may then inform techniques used to persuade young people to spend more time using services, to shape the content they are encouraged to engage with, and to tailor the advertisements they see.

Body-worn cameras to be given to A&E staff at Southend Hospital to slash abuse

Body-worn cameras are being introduced in the Emergency Department at Southend Hospital in a bid to improve the safety of both patients and staff.

The cameras will only be activated if a patient becomes abusive or violent, and staff will inform the individual before recording begins. This measure comes in response to increasing incidents of verbal and physical abuse against NHS workers.

I am a privacy expert and this is why I believe user personalization is the future of privacy

Personalized content is now a fact of life – what was once considered innovative is now standard for online marketing.

Whilst that’s the super power of personalization, it’s also a bit… disconcerting? As convenient as it might be to see exactly the right product at exactly the right time, this also raises a lot of questions: where does all of this information actually come from? Exactly how much does this company know about me? Did I really consent to sharing all of this data?

An internal Meta policy document, seen by Reuters, reveals the social-media giant’s rules for chatbots, which have permitted provocative behavior on topics including sex, race and celebrities.

Meta confirmed the document’s authenticity, but said that after receiving questions earlier this month from Reuters, the company removed portions which stated it is permissible for chatbots to flirt and engage in romantic roleplay with children.

Police to release ethnicity and nationality of suspects to stop social media misinformation

Police have been advised to publicly share the ethnicity and nationality of suspects charged in high-profile cases in a bid to curb misinformation spreading online.

The guidance, which is effective immediately, has been issued by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) and the College of Policing after mounting pressure on police over the details they make public.

There has been growing criticism of the police handling of incidents in recent weeks, especially the case of two men, reportedly Afghan asylum seekers, who were charged with the rape of a 12-year-old girl in Warwickshire.
